First appearing in Episode 35 of Ultraman, Seabozu has long been beloved for its
gentle, endearing character despite its ghostly appearance. Drawing on his deep
admiration for Ultraman's iconic kaiju, James Groman reinterprets Seabozu with his
signature sculpting style.
Known for his mastery of skeletal and organic forms, James transforms Seabozu into
a striking collectible through meticulously sculpted bone details and realistic
paintwork. While emphasizing its powerful skeletal design, he faithfully preserves the
monster's quiet loneliness and unmistakable charm.

Artist Comment – James Groman

Last year, I had the opportunity to write about my memories of the Ultraman TV series and my
first encounter with the infamous Red King. While Red King is a truly vicious brute—a bully and
one of the series' ultimate villains—I always found Seabozu to be far more deserving of
sympathy than fear.
I have always believed that the name "Seabozu" was inspired by the Japanese yōkai Umibōzu
("Sea Monk"). In Japanese folklore, the Umibōzu is a gigantic spirit that emerges from the ocean
to attack ships at sea. The name always felt absolutely fitting for this zombie-like monster.
Seabozu is an undead monster who is accidentally brought to Earth by a rocket from the
"Graveyard of Monsters" in Episode 35. Like many kaiju, he initially goes on a destructive
rampage. Eventually, however, the Science Patrol discovers that all he truly wants is to return to
his grave in space.
As a child, I remember being a little disappointed by Seabozu's somewhat childlike and
humorous behavior in the episode—I preferred my monsters to be a bit more ferocious. At the
same time, though, I completely fell in love with Tsuburaya's wonderfully bizarre skeletal
creature design. More importantly, I was deeply moved by the dark, tragic fact that all Seabozu
really wanted was to return to his grave—to the land of the dead. That heartbreaking
motivation made him one of the most misunderstood kaiju in the entire series.
When it came time to choose the next figure in the Ultraman Kaiju Remix line after Red King,
my friend Kaz at Acro suggested Seabozu. He felt the character perfectly matched the undead
anatomical details that have become one of my trademarks as a sculptor.
This time, I also wanted to reinterpret Seabozu's attitude and pose.
What if he were absolutely furious about being dragged back from the Graveyard of Monsters?
What if, before returning to his eternal resting place, he wanted to unleash as much destruction
upon humanity as possible?
I found that idea fascinating, and it became the foundation for his pose. I wanted him to be
roaring in defiance while still gazing ever so slightly toward the sky—as if he already knew
where he was ultimately destined to return.
I am incredibly pleased with how this figure turned out, and I feel very fortunate to have
partners like Kaz and everyone at Acro in bringing this project to life.
I hope you enjoy this figure as much as we enjoyed creating it.
